I started drawing miniature portraits, (a little smaller than a quarter,) a few years ago. The smaller I draw the slower the process and the less I can rely on my eyes to render tiny details. Fortunately, I have a magnifier head piece that I can wear over my prescription lenses to get the job done. Unfortunately, I resemble Rick Moranis in Honey I Shrunk The Kids in my head gear, which scares the daylights out of my poor cats.

It's amazing how the smallest dot resembles a line amongst the many details of minature drawings and so I refine my technique right down to the sharpest pencil point. The 24ct gold leaf I've integrated into these portraits comes from an old tradition I began in my teens of blending old world craft with fine art.

Precious metals have always been part of a jeweler's craft and these tiny portraits remind me of gemstones that sparkle and reflect the facets of light around them. I love how intimate these portraits feel in their small frames, approachable and lovely as I hope my artwork will always be for you.
